Sonar Kollektiv releases “Ten Years, Who Cares?”

Posted by admin on June 19th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

cell phoneAlmost unbelievable how time flies by!

Sonar Kollektiv was founded in 1997 by the constantly subversive DJ/producer team Jazzanova who are this year celebrating ten years of their label.

10 years might but it’s a veritable age in the fast moving world of the music business,

and considering the continually changing musical landscape,

it is all the nicer that the unique concept of Sonar Kollektiv is still growing and bearing new fruits.

10 years of Sonar Kollektiv simply means 10 years in which the JAZZANOVA members ALEX BARCK, CLAAS BRIELER, JÜRGEN V. KNOBLAUCH, AXEL REINEMER, STEFAN LEISERING and ROSKOW KRETSCHMANN have been appearing as a multi-faceted and powerful formation. Through their great international success (countless DJ gigs, compilations, remixes for 4HERO, INCOGNITO, MARCOS VALLE, TRÜBY TRIO, their own album, production for various other artists and radio shows), JAZZANOVA have established the basis for Sonar Kollektiv. These achievements speak for themselves and form the basis for an ever growing network.

Of course, a label isn’t just made up of its founders but also out of the artists for whom the label offers a creative platform. Through their tireless A&R work - always eclectic but still bound by definite goals - JAZZANOVA have managed to gather a roster of artists around them who, with their high quality of output, have also managed to enjoy worldwide fame: CLARA HILL, FAT FREDDYS DROP, SLOPE, ÂME, MICATONE, TRICKSKI, these are just some of the many Sonar Kollektiv artists who expand the boundaries in their respective genres and are rightfully respected.

The label has always concerned itself with ‘the space in between’ and opened doors which maintain a balance between underground eclecticism and music that reaches out to a wide audience. Not for nothing is Sonar Kollektiv known as the only ‘dance label that doesn’t actually release any dance music’. It’s not just about functional DJ tools (although these are of course part of the labels’ back catalogue), rather musical pieces with song character - music which doesn’t just focus on the bare minimum but on club goers, the listener and those who like to enjoy the music on other levels.

So what could be more appropriate than celebrating this anniversary with a musically all encompassing compilation? The double CD set reflects again the label founders two pronged strategy; CD1 is packed full of 20 musical pearls while CD2 is a DJ mix by JAZZANOVA, showing the club orientated aspects of Sonar Kollektiv which have always played an important role.

It must have been a struggle to select tracks from the entire label catalogue. One thing is for sure, the labels’ strategy comes through; old tracks are found along side brand new material and sound no less fresh than at the time of first release. This consistency proves itself on other levels as well - many of the original artists are still with the label and they are now important figures.

Some of the highlights on CD1 include tracks by FORSS, MICATONE, JOE DUKIE, OUTLINES, DIMLITE, THIEF, JAZZANOVA as well as BENNY SINGS, while CD2 contains (among others) tunes from ÂME, EXTENDED SPIRIT, WAHOO, KABUKI and SLOPE.

These are tracks which will also be presented live in autumn 2007 by the Sonar Kollektiv Allstars Orchestra which is currently being assembled by VOLKER MEITZ, complete with backing band, string section and all the business. These two perspectives on the same selection of songs will confirm another important fundament of the label; Sonar Kollektiv has always been at the meeting point of analogue and digital, organic and electric. Here’s to the next 10 years!

Paul Van Dyk will release new album “In Between” on August 14th

Posted by admin on June 19th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

cell phoneThe world’s #1 DJ Paul van Dyk is back with a dynamic new effort that spotlights his incredible talent as a producer and recording artist. On August 14th, Mute Records will release the long awaited new original album “In Between,” which van Dyk feels is his most personal and strongest album to date. The album features a wide range of collaborations including David Byrne of the Talking Heads, Jessica Sutta of the Pussycat Dolls, Ashley Tomberlin from Luminary, Alex M.O.R.P.H, Lo Fi Sugar, Rea Garvey of Reamonn, Ryan Merchant and Wayne Jackson.

The first single “White Lies” will be released July 31st and features vocals from Jessica Sutta of the Pussycat Dolls which confirms van Dyk’s cult status as one of the most relevant artists and producers in dance music. “I had a lot of fun working with Jessica. Her lascivious voice and sexy attitude reflects the theme of the single perfectly.”

Paul van Dyk’s innovation in music production is matched only by the selection of Cuba as the location for the album’s artwork. “I’ve always been a fan of the movie Buena Vista Social Club,” van Dyk says. “When I finally got to visit Cuba last year for the first time, I felt so very deeply inspired by its atmosphere and the people, that I wanted to capture some of this feeling with me. This album is very different from what I’ve done in the past, and so is Cuba it seems. It’s a country where time has come to a complete standstill, and yet people seem so very happy.”

To kick off the album’s official release in the US, Paul will be meeting fans at an in-store appearance at New York’s Virgin Megastore in Union Square at 7PM on Tuesday, August 14th. He will also perform for a record fifth consecutive year at New York’s Central Park on Friday, August 17th and Saturday, August 18th. On special occasions such as the Central Park performances, Paul will be joined by guest performers from the album [drummer, keyboards, vocalists].

Paul van Dyk received a Grammy nomination in 2005 for Best Dance/Electronic Album for his original album “Reflections” ” this marked the first time NARAS recognized this category. His original productions from “Reflections” have been synced into major motion pictures such as Into the Blue, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, television’s Entertainment Tonight and MTV’s Cribs international ad campaigns for Motorola, HBO, Land Rover, and most recently for Jeep this spring. With over 3 million albums sold worldwide, van Dyk travels the equivalent of circling the globe over 16 times each year to sold out performances internationally. With an average of over 130 gigs per year, Paul performs to audiences of over 3 million people yearly. Aside from his musical activity, Paul van Dyk has always dedicated a significant part of his life to politics and social justice: from his youth, when he fled over the Berlin Wall to the West, to his children’s charity in India’s Mumbai, and his partnership scheme with the German Red Cross to help poor children in Berlin. In 2004, van Dyk was the only electronic artist involved in a nationwide tour with the Rock The Vote campaign, where he joined the likes of Bono, P Diddy, the Black Eyed Peas and George Clinton in campaigning for America’s youth to sign up to vote in the presidential election. He most recently received Berlin’s Medal of Honor (Landesverdienstorden) in recognition of his work with Ruckenwind, a charity organization he founded dedicated to helping poor children of Berlin.

more accessible, and yet still undeniably Matthew Dear.

Incorporating his uniquely crafted textures alongside international rhythmic influences,

plus a lyrical storytelling element from his Texas upbringing, Asa Breed is a completely unique musical experience.

Since his debut at the decade’s beginning, Matthew Dear has been championed as North America’s brightest new electronic talent. His 2003 debut, Leave Luck To Heaven, garnered unequivocal praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, Spin and Entertainment Weekly, and in the period since, Dear has conquered the international techno scene under the alias of Audion. But when it came time to return to his roots, there was only one path to take.

With each track on this album, Dear tells a unique story about life and human relationships with his rich baritone voice and fusion of live and electronic instruments. In sum, Asa Breed represents a new feeling and a more expansive look into the psyche of an artist coming into his own.

Roger Sanchez presents.. Release Yourself Volume 6

Posted by admin on June 12th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

cell phone

Release Yourself is a concept born many moons ago in the mind of the Grammy award winning artist Roger Sanchez. A seminal single (Release Yo Self) under Roger’s Transatlantic Soul production moniker back in 1996, a fully immersive party experience from 2001, a world-shaking radio show and CD compilation series since 2002, and a prolific podcast from 2006 ” Release Yourself, like evolution itself, tells us that only the strong survive. So move your ass, stomp your feet, and set your mind free, because the very latest trip in this time-honoured compilation series is here. Blending deep house, Latin, tribal and electro-tech sounds, explosive programming with sparks of S-Man magic, the relentless groove of Release Yourself 6 is sure to set speakers ablaze as it’s unleashed on 4th June via Roger’s own Stealth Records label!

The genesis of Release Yourself was certainly shaped by Roger’s life as a native New Yorker. A former student of architecture and a disciple of the legendary Paradise Garage, there came a time, in the late 80s, when he had to choose between a prestigious education at the Pratt Institute and his burgeoning love of house music and club culture. That Roger went on to cement his stellar reputation as a DJ and producer around the world is a testament to his robust belief in the power of music to liberate people, physically and mentally.

The first Release Yourself event took place in June 2001 at El Divino on the clubbers’ paradise island of Ibiza. “I named it after my track Release Yo Self by Transatlantic Soul to symbolise what I wanted people to do at my parties,” explains Roger. And, of course, it went down a storm! A year later Release Yourself moved to Pacha, where Roger has been revered as a resident ever since, developing an intimate relationship with the clubbing mecca and its cosmopolitan crowds. Now, in 2007, following an illuminating start to the Release Yourself season at Miami WMC, the party returns to Pacha Ibiza from Monday 18th June, with sunset pre-parties taking place once again at Cafe Mambo. The Release Yourself theme for this cell phoneyear is signs of the zodiac and we can definitely predict that there will be some astronomical parties up ahead, in Ibiza and beyond. You will, for example, be able to enjoy Release Yourself marathons at several festivals this summer, including Mystery Land in the Netherlands and Global Gathering in the UK, so stay tuned.

Meanwhile serving millions of listeners who love to stay tuned is Roger’s hugely popular Release Yourself radio show. It smashed onto the scene in 2002 and is now syndicated weekly to 27 stations internationally. With an emphasis on the unique and the upfront, Release Yourself was one of the first dance shows to evolve into a podcast. Indeed, from pimpin’ his mix tapes on Broadway in the 80s to spinning digital video discs as he fronts his all-action live S-Men band in the 00s, Roger has always utilised the technology of his time to connect more deeply with clubbers. Launched in March 2006, the Release Yourself Podcast now has 60,000+ bi-weekly subscribers and even won the Best Podcast category in the 22nd International Dance Music Awards (IDMAs) during WMC 2007.

So, finally, let’s return full circle to Release Yourself Volume 6. As a 100 percent pure Release Yourself encounter, its sounds flow seamlessly over two CDs, with a sexy, soul drenched pre-party selection chased up by pounding peak time party programming. And since the Basement Jaxx remixed Release Yo Self (’back in the day’), it is fitting that their hot new track Cool It kickstarts 2007’s party CD in a big way. This mix houses an array of upfront tracks, including Agent Greg Vs. Audiopunch’s soaring Symphony of Love, The Nightcrawlers’ Push the Feeling On (Belocca’s Cheeky Bootleg Mix), and Nick Terranova & Austin Leeds’ Dirty Sound (Miami Dirt Mix) ” all of which will be forthcoming on Stealth.

Says Roger: “The Release Yourself mixes remain a true reflection of what is going on on my dancefloors. The party mix has taken on more modern electronic elements, as have my sets, while the pre party side now incorporates even more variety within its deeper sounds.”

Join the internationally renowned DJ, producer and presenter to celebrate the celestial beauty of house music this summer. Embodying over a decade of Transatlantic Soul, and now in the mix with a fresh electronic twist, Release Yourself Volume 6 is out on 4th June via Stealth Records.

Ibiza Crisis: Super-clubs Shut Down by Authorities

Posted by admin on June 9th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

It is a something that I never thought I would hear…..some of the biggest clubs in Ibiza have been shut down for the majority of the summer. As many of you know Ibiza is known as the party capital of the world. Clubs like Amnesia, Bora Bora and DC10 have hosted some of the most world renowned parties over the years, and now they are closed.

If you are/were planning to visit Ibiza this summer, I advise you to read this article in full, sign the petition at the bottom and keep checking back with DanceNode as the news of this unfortunate event unfolds.

Ibiza woke up to ugly news for clubbers this morning: a whiplash Government mandate to shut down DC10 for the next two months and Amnesia and Bora Bora for the next month, effective immediately. Our source says clubs are banding together to take legal action, and will be bringing you updates as and when news happens.”Holy shit” was all I could say when I heard. A whirlwind of vicious rumours about policing and politics always blows through Ibiza like an ill wind, but seeing the news in a three-line head on the front page of Diario de Ibiza still came as a rude, rude shock. The news inside was brief, non-specific, but to the point. The action is in response to local police and Guardia Civil reports on the use and/or dealing of drugs within the venues during 2005-2006, and the allegation the clubs have done nothing to stop it.Their argument is: it’s dangerous and it damages Ibiza’s tourist credentials. Also, they say, during the opening weekend this summer 450 people were found to be in possession of intoxicating drugs, and one hospital took in 11 people with symptoms of drug intoxication (though no details were supplied as to the types of drug(s) involved, or the number of cases involving alcohol abuse in the same period). Where do you start with that line up of information? Curiously, no facts or figures are given for the drug use “observed” in 2005-2006. Or, more saliently, to back up the Government assertion that the use created “dangerous situations.” After spending seven sweaty, crowded, but peaceful hours in DC10 last Monday (where two blokes tried, but didn’t quite manage to have a fight, and wound up shaking hands and dancing together 20 minutes later) I walked back to my hotel through the West End of Sant Antoni. The streets were crammed with ferociously drunk Brits staggering, shouting, shoving or simply collapsing. It was the only time all weekend I felt unsafe, and I’m prepared to swear none of them were taking drugs. This adds an interesting twist to the argument that the use of drugs in these three particular clubs damages Ibiza’s tourist image. To whom, unwilling, does the drug menace present its ugly face? The hard-hit DC10 is down a side road where no straight-headed tourist would ever have a reason to be. Moreover, it’s doubly enclosed: a high white fence around thick white walls. You have to be a paying customer to see what goes on inside, and it’s hard to imagine many people go through the doors who don’t know exactly what to expect. The same goes for Amnesia, hermetically sealed off from the outside world and certainly from passing families on their way to the beach. Arguably Bora Bora may be accessible to “unwary” tourists, but the worst thing you’re likely to see there are ruddy Englishmen putting away too much San Miguel, or the odd hippie wandering around sporting bad dreads. Hardly enough to scar even the most delicate sensibility.

On the other hand, the binge drinking in Sant Antoni is an obvious, ugly, intimidating fact of life for many who are merely trying to have a week in the sun with the kids. Yet that scene is apparently immune from the clenched fist of the law.

Of course, there is the superficially impressive figure of 450 people caught red handed with “sustancis estupefacientes” in three days. It sounds like a lot. Until you remember how many thousands of clubbers poured into each of the clubs over the past weekend. Space and DC10 accounted for 30,000 clubbers (a conservative estimate). Assuming the majority of those seizures were from those two main parties, that leaves the rate of drug busts at a paltry 1,5%. That’s more than 98% of clubbers, according to the police’s own statistics, who did nothing wrong. Which makes these club closures a monstrous punishment meted out to many for the sins of very few.

It also raises the interesting question: why these? Amnesia isn’t even open, so they surely aren’t responsible for any of last weekend’s busts. Why one and not the other? Who´s next?

One thing is certain: the people who are going to suffer most deserve it the least. The industry in Ibiza lives for summer. To be shut down for a month here is like an ordinary club being shut down for a year. First to get the chop are going to be the people who work the hardest for the least money ” PRs, bartenders, cleaning staff ” many of whom will have saved up all year to come out to the island for a summer of work and play (and will shortly be on a plane home); many more Ibicencos who rely on the summer months for their main income. It seems a cheap, ugly shot for the Government to take at its own people and economic stability. Almost as if they threw it before thinking quite what would happen when the blow fell.

Then there are the thousands of people who’ve already booked and paid for holidays, and are eagerly anticipating their favourite events: Circoloco and Superfreq at DC10; Cocoon and Cream at Amnesia… Forget damaging the tourist industry: don’t the powers that be realise people spend all year looking forward to one or two blinding nights in Ibiza, and will be bitterly disappointed and angry ” especially at the timing? Since this action is in response to alleged problems in 2005-2006 many will wonder, rightly, why they waited until the start of the season (when most dedicated clubbers are already committed to their holidays) to make this brutal announcement. There is a whiff of bait-and-switch about it. Almost as if they waited till the last moment, till the frenzy of opening weekend got everybody excited about Ibiza, talking about Ibiza, planning for Ibiza, to drop the bomb. (Surely if they were that concerned following last season they could have spent the winter discussing and working with DC10, Amnesia and Bora Bora to implement changes or increase security?)

This will inevitably deal a massive blow to this season, but it’s the coming years the Ibicencos will have to worry about. Once this becomes public knowledge people from around the world will think twice before booking their week or two weeks´ holiday next year. Why spend your holiday money to go to clubbing paradise when there’s a good chance you’ll arrive to find your favourite clubs locked up, dark and silent? Some people will take the chance ” depending on how the situation plays out ” but many more will be understandably reluctant to commit to Ibiza again. Which, again, will have a deleterious knock-on effect for the majority of Ibicencos who work in the tourist trade, and on the rest of the local economy that relies on their spending power year-round.

Ibiza-Voice sources assure us DC10, Amnesia and Bora Bora have banded together to take legal action against this ruling. Unless there is incredibly compelling information that’s not yet in the public domain it is hard to see how the Government will justify this particular course of action and its timing. Speculation will be rife until the matter is settled, one way or

another, and probably for long after.

Money, drugs, politics: it’s a witches brew, and the authorities have stirred up a pot that may have been better left alone. The spectre of future arbitrary club closures is a kick in the teeth for the industry as everyone looks over their shoulder and wonders, “who’s next?” now a political Pandora’s Box is open it may be impossible to contain the heavy, ugly repercussions…

Underworld and Gabriel Yared - Breaking and Entering OST

Posted by admin on June 9th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

Underworld and Academy Award winning Gabriel Yard have joined forces to co-write the music to the new Anthony Minghella directed film ‘Breaking & Entering’. This is Underworld at their emotive best, underpinned by the orchestration and textured layers of one of the best film score writers of his time ” Gabriel Yared. Anthony Mighella is best known for directing titles such as ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’, ‘The English Patient’, and ‘Cold Mountain’. ‘Breaking & Entering’ promises to follow suit with the lead roles being undertaken by Jude Law, Juliette Binoche, Robin Right Penn, Ray Winstone and Martin Freeman.

When you combine the talents of Underworld and Gabriel Yared the results are, unsurprisingly, majestic. This soundtrack has trademark Underworld sonics and production values stamped all over it. Combine this with Gabriel Yared’s own brand of composition (which has seen him win many an award), and you have a piece of music that oozes quality and emotion.

‘Breaking & Entering’ is shot against the backdrop of a changing London whose geography and cultural landscape is in flux. Centred around Jude Law’s character, who’s company is redeveloping Kings Cross, it explores the darker side of relationships and human emotion. The score weaves complex and deeply emotive textures and patterns through the fabric of the film - surprising, challenging and drawing the viewer into Minghella’s world of “Breaking & Entering”.

Says Anthony Minghella:

“Witnessing Gabriel, Karl and Rick in a room together was a revelation. Musicians instinctively understand each other through playing together, and some early sessions at Abbey Road, of experiment and investigation, led to a growing mutual respect and a great deal of pleasure. A contract of generosity was established. Underworld found a new, if temporary, member. Gabriel discovered two co-composers who offered a thoroughly modern perspective on his process. For all their apparent differences, they were completely relaxed in the studio.”

“Breaking & Entering” debuts in the UK on November 10th (Buena Visa International) and is preceded by it’s premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on 27th October.
