Recovering Damaged Records Without a Needle

Posted by admin on July 19th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

Every DJ knows the pain of having their favourite record scratched, broken or warped so badly you can no longer play it, and it’s even more painful to try and bring yourself to throw it away. Short of turning it into a fruit bowl there hasn’t been many options up until now, but physicist Carl Haber has come up with a new way to recover those records without ever needing a needle to touch it’s surface.

This turntable doesn’t spin like a normal record player. And there’s no needle hovering over the record. Instead, there’s a camera linked to a computer. It snaps detailed images of the groove cut into the disc, and uses the images to reconstruct the sound without ever touching the record.

The technology was initially developed for the recovery of archived records that would be destroyed by a needle touching the surface and with digital music being so prevalent today it’s unlikely it will ever find common use in the home, but it’s nice to know that you will still be able to play your limited edition white labels even if your turntables don’t last the distance.

Australian Nightclubs Hit with More Fees

Posted by admin on July 16th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

It seems with all the RIAA talk about licensing fees has caused another increase in the Australian dance community. As of July 10th, the Copyright Tribunal sided with artists to approve an application by the Phonographic Performance Company for an increase in music license fees paid to artists and record labels by nightclub venues and dance parties.

It lifted rates for recordings played in nightclubs from seven cents per person a night to $1.05 per person. The dance party rate rises from 20 cents to $3.07 per person.

The nightclub industry fears the increase will send many clubs broke.

Source

After reading the above article, I decided to dig around a little more to confirm what I had just read. I decided to go directly to the Phonographic Performance Company website and this is what they have this to say about the recent approval

On 10 July 2007, the Copyright Tribunal handed down its decision in relation to the PPCA’s proposed nightclub and dance party licensing schemes. Click here to view the Copyright Tribunal’s judgment. With respect to nightclubs, a rate of $1.05 has been set for each person per night of operation, to be calculated on the basis of the venue’s capacity. Further, for dances and dance parties, the Copyright Tribunal adjusted the rate to $3.07 for each person that attends each event. A hearing has been scheduled for 27 July 2007 in which more detailed provisions for the implementation of the new schemes will be considered by the Tribunal. Once this hearing has taken place, PPCA will publish further details on this website. Please note that there will be no changes to the tariffs before 1 August 2007.

Should you have any further questions about the new changes, please contact PPCA on (02) 8569 1100.

With this recent turn of events, we could see a decrease in events as promoters may not be able to absorb such an increase. If an event hosts 1000 people, they would need to find an additional $3,070.00 to run the event. This will have an impact on party goers alike if they in turn they raise the price of admission to cover this increase. Let’s hope for the Australian community that the hearing on July 27th, 2007 provides a better outcome.

As news is released to the public, DanceNode will provide updates to the situation.

Save Internet Radio Part Five

Posted by admin on July 13th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

Internet Radio stations have been dealt yet another blow in the ongoing fight with the Copyright Board of America to have reasonable royalty rates kept for Internet radio stations. The US District Court of Appeals has just denied a petition to delay the rate hike due on the 15th of July 2007.

This means that in just two days, thousands of internet radio stations (based in the United States) are at the mercy of the greedy greedy SoundExchange and their insane new fees. What makes this even more sickening is the fact that they are able to collect fee’s retroactively from the start of 2006 meaning that even though stations were legally licensed and paying their royalty fees as per the law, they now have to pay the difference based on the new expensive and crippling fee structure.

For the six largest internet Radio stations (Pandora, Yahoo, live365, Real Networks Inc, AOL and MTV Online) this equates to 47 percent of their combined revenue for 2006 (or $37.5 million) in new royalty rates. Imagine what this will do to the small struggling stations and not-for-profit stations!

Our only hope now is for the Internet Radio Equality Act to make some ground in the senate, if not it will be time to start shopping for servers in Europe and Canada.

Source: Reuters.

UPDATE: I have been informed by Mark over at Party107 that even though the appeals court has denied the delay, SoundExchange themselves have realized how stupid the fee’s are and have announced, in front of congress that they will not be enforcing the new royalty rates while they work with online radio to come to an agreeable rate. This is only a reprieve and we won’t be entirely safe until we have acceptable rates for Internet Radio in the United States.

Riley & Durrant Release Debut Album: ‘Research & Development’

Posted by admin on July 9th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

Since meeting behind the decks at the old Gatecrasher in Sheffield Nick Riley & Andi Durrant have come come a long way. With the pair reaching over a half a million people a week with their radio shows including the very popular ‘Nu Breed’ radio show on the Galaxy Network and their hectic DJ diary covering Russia, Asia, Europe and the USA its hard to imagine them getting the time to sit down and create an artist album, yet somehow they have.

Due for release on July 23rd through New State Music, ‘Research & Development’ features twelve tracks covering dirty house, deep techno, ambient interludes and trance. With strong vocal collaborations with Gina Dootson on tracks ‘Hollow’, ‘Dead Of Night’, ‘Tears Down The Walls’ (alongside production skills of Paul Maddox) and ‘Magnificent Love’ the duo also work with vocalist Ben Renwick on ‘My Enemy’ producers Hauswerks on ‘Experiment No.2’ and a brand new version of their classic ‘Candesco’ this album will cross boundaries into many genres.

Through his radio work Andi recently won Bronze Award for ‘The Music Broadcaster Of The Year’ in the Sony Radio Academy Awards, falling behind Radio 1’s Colin Murray & Steve Lamacq whilst beating Jo Whiley. The pair’s hectic DJ Diary sees them tour the world with gigs taking them across Russia, Asia, Europe and USA regularly rocking clubs like Cream, Godskitchen, Slinky, Passion Goodgreef, Judgement Sunday and their diverse play list sees them booked them alongside the likes of Tiësto, Sasha and Pete Tong.

Both artists have strong musical backgrounds (between them, classically trained in piano, keyboards, violin, and drums) and early on the decision was to focus on their own production. Working out of a tiny bedroom studio in Andi’s flat, their first track ‘Candesco’ (featured on this album) was a true trance anthem, picked up by the biggest DJ in the world ” Tiësto and was a highlight of his record-breaking first 25,000 capacity ‘Tiësto In Concert’ show in Holland. Following this the remix work came flooding in and names that have been under the Riley & Durrant knife include Way Out West, Sinead O’Connor and Armin Van Buuren.

2006 saw the guys take a step back from remix work and take time to focus on their debut artist album ‘Research & Development’. Stripping their sound back to basics they teamed up with a variety of hot singers, songwriters, musicians and engineers from scenes as varied as folk, indie, house, minimal, trance and electro making their first album impossible to pigeon hole without losing their unique sound. It’s the same combination of electronic beats, big basslines, melancholic vocals, guitars, synths and strings that you’ll hear in a Riley & Durrant DJ set, but carefully brought together to create something that works as well in the club as it does on a Sunday afternoon.

Alongside the album the first single ‘Hollow’ featuring Gina Dootson will also be released so keep an eye out because if this release is anything like their previous work, it’s going to be a killer. Stay tuned for a full review.

Damian Lazarus and DJ T. man the decks for the second installment of ‘Monza Club Ibiza’ on Get Physical

Posted by admin on July 8th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

 cell phone

Get Physical presents the second instalment of their Monza Ibiza Club mix series, a double CD mixed by Damian Lazarus and DJ T.

After last year’s inaugural mix from London-based Heidi, Vol. 2 brings together the talents of Damian Lazarus and DJ T. for two discs of future-minded, minimal and electro-influenced house and techno - the soundtrack to Monza’s third season at Ibiza.

Monza was founded in 1999 by DJ T. and Patrick Dechent in their then hometown of Frankfurt, one of the most important European centres in the development of electronic music. They continued to run Monza Frankfurt until 2004, when they parted ways with their business partners, and moved to Berlin and Ibiza respectively. Patrick revived the Monza brand in Ibiza, with a residency at the island’s Penelope club over the 2005 season, inviting DJ T., the Get Physical crew and friends from further afield to man the decks. Last year, Monza enjoyed a very successful season yet in its adopted home of Ibiza, at the legendary Space, and is set to return to the white isle for 2007, this time at Privilege.

Damian Lazarus is the mastermind behind Crosstown Rebels, widely considered to be the UK’s foremost electronic, house and techno label. This reputation is founded upon release after release of real quality and originality. Over the years, Crosstown have put out singles, albums and remixes from the likes of Pier Bucci, Kiki & Silversurfer, James Holden, Black Strobe, Mathew Jonson and 3 Channels. Crosstown’s catalogue takes in various styles of music - including abstract techno, disco and punk-funk - but the label has always been primarily focused on forward-thinking, deep and twisted electronic house music.

Damian’s career as a DJ has been an illustrious one, and he is rightly renowned as one of the freshest purveyors of underground dance music in the world. Hailing from London, he’s taken to the decks all over the globe, from Europe to South America to Australia and beyond; and last year he enjoyed a residency at Ibiza’s legendary DC-10 alongside Loco Dice. Damian is behind several seminal mix CDs, including the four Futurism and Rebel Futurism comps, Get Lost Vol. 1 (with Matthew Styles) and the critically-acclaimed Suck My Deck (2005) for Bugged Out!.

DJ T, aka Thomas Koch, is well known as the founder of Groove magazine (and its publisher for fifteen years), and co-founder of Get Physical Records in Berlin. He began the label with his friends M.A.N.D.Y. and Booka Shade, and has been instrumental in the shaping of the Physical sound and aesthetic. He released a well- received full-length album, Boogie Playground, in 2005, and he has had club hits with tracks like ‘Funk on You’, ‘Time Out’ and ‘Freemind’. As a DJ, Thomas too has rocked clubnights and festivals around the world; and last year he provided the second chapter of Physical’s Body Language mix series (other contributors to this series include Jesse Rose, M.A.N.D.Y. and Dixon).

Lazarus takes charge of the first disc of Monza Ibiza Club Mix Vol. 2, with a typically deep, energetic and wide-ranging selection of tracks. He sets the scene with three back-to-back exclusives: Four Tet’s elegant reworking of ‘You Are Here’ by Border Community boy wonder Nathan Fake, ‘Glasgow’ by Crosstown’s resident genius Pier Bucci, and Loco Dice’s sumptuous remix of Dennis Ferrer’s piano-driven ‘Son of Raw’. The latter track in particular illustrates the collapsing of boundaries between contemporary minimal techno and old school-deep house, and is every bit as thrilling as you’d expect. Edfemin’s club hit ‘Just A Track’ whips this mix into a party-pointed frenzy, with skippy, dancefloor-friendly techno productions from Patrick Zigon, Outlines and Stefan Goldmann sandwiching another tasty exclusive: the acapella from Shackleton’s much-anticipated ‘Next to Nothing’. Shackleton has gained considerable popularity for his minimal take on dubstep through both his own work and his Skull Disco label, and has recently been remixed by Ricardo Villalobos; ‘Next to Nothing’ features the vocal talents of cult US post-punk outfit Savage Republic, and will be released as a 12″ on Crosstown Rebels later this year. Danton Eeprom, Konrad Black and homegrown Crosstown talent Jamie Jones also feature; the mix winds down in heaviness but not in intensity with Henrik Schwarz’s recent hit ‘Walk Music’, Trentemoller’s jazz-inflected ‘An Evening with Bobbi Bros’ and concludes with a bona fide comedown classic: the Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeve mix of Findlay Brown. Lazarus provides an extraordinary, ambitious and intimate session which also provides the perfect entrée for Monza Ibiza Club Vol. 2’s second disc…

This second disc is masterfully assembled by DJ T. T has always been respected for his intimate understanding of dance music’s past and his committed engagement with its future ” and this Monza Mix is firmly rooted in the here and now, with a host of new tracks and Physical exclusives comprising the smooth and dynamic selection. However, while T.’s mix is always moving forward, one eye is always looking back ” looking at the history of the future, so to speak. The inclusion of Arto Mwambe’s 2007 cut ‘Ombala Mbembo’, a thrillingly modern collision of influences from the past ” the best of Chicago and Detroit and a flavour of early 90s vocal house ” is emblematic of DJ T.’s approach to the mix. A search for music which absorbs the past and embraces the future to transcend its place in time ” music which is ultimately timeless. The disc’s opener, Joakim’s edgy electro reworking of Max Berlin’s ‘Elle & Moi’, still sounds entirely relevant and contemporary; by kicking off proceedings with this track, DJ T. shows us where today’s music has come from, its roots. This is especially true of Schatrax’s ‘Mispent Years’, a 1995 house classic. The real vintage jewel in Monza Club Vol. 2’s crown, ‘Mispent Years’ sits perfectly with Claude von Stroke’s trancey, as-yet-unreleased ‘Groundhog Day’, and sounds as futuristic now as it did twelve years ago.

From then on it, it’s all about the now, with cutting edge productions from Martins Buttrich and Landsky, top-drawer minimal house and techno from Daniel Stefanik and Mike Shannon. There’s also room for the twisted pop of Junior Boys (Carl Craig’s cavernous re-rub of ‘Like A Child’) and T.’s own brooding builder ‘The Dawn’ from his new release on Get Physical. The achievements of Get Physical’s experimental sister label Kindisch are celebrated with two cuts from their young catalogue ” the deep piano house of Einzelkind and a slice of yearning, off-kilter pop from Raz Ohara. The selection is rounded off with two shimmering beauties from Hamburg’s Dial Recordings: Edfemin’s Bergwein and Pantha Du Prince’s boundary-shifting orchestral epic ‘Saturn Strobe’.

Two of modern electronic music’s most respected label-heads and DJs come together to furnish Get Physical with a double-CD compilation of impeccable taste and inarguable quality: two mixes that go way deep and provide numerous exclusives, without losing their sense of timelessness and fun.
