The fourth volume of the “At the Controls” series will be mixed by French electroist Agoria.

Posted by admin on September 28th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

cell phoneAgoria is known for his noisy, eclectic take on dance music, as demonstrated on his big singles ‘Les Beaux Jours’ and ‘Stereolove’ as well as last year’s longplayer ‘The Green Armchair’.

As a DJ, Agoria is inclined to throw a few curveballs into his mixes: his debut mix CD ‘Cute & Cult’ dropped Iggy Pop’s ‘Nightclubbing’ halfway through, while his 2CD ‘At the Controls’ mix features tracks by fifties electronic whiz Raymond Scott and goth rockers Bauhaus amid more up-to-the-minute techno and house selections.

The ‘At the Controls’ series has previously featured volumes by James Holden, M.A.N.D.Y. and Claude Von Stroke.

DJ 3000 mixes the Detroit Connection Pt.2

Posted by admin on September 28th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

cell phone

The Detroit Connection Pt.2 takes the baton from Detroit legend and previous compiler Kevin Saunderson and hands over to DJ 3000 for another excilerating chapter in this mix series. This new DJ-mix album on the Slovenian Explicit/Matrix Music label (co-owned by Umek) is the latest installment in the ‘Ekspozicija’ series (following other releases by DJ Rush, Marco Bailey, Christian Smith, Slam, and Cristian Varela) is as high-quality as can be expected from an artist such high calibre as DJ 3000.

It is deep and driving journey complete with DJ 3000’s distinctive trademark ethnic influences. The the mix has been created live with no studio trickery, which is refreshing in this day and age. DJ 3000 is not afraid to blend seemingly incompatible electronic styles together, and his set includes the most current work of some of the most innovative artists from the electronic underground: Buscemi, Robert Hood, Technasia, Octave One, Ican, Suburban Knight, Christian Fischer, and Pigna People, with the added bonus of the inclusion of some of DJ 3000’s own unreleased tracks and collaborations.

If you ask most producers and DJ’s about their musical upbringing, most, if not all, will point to the influence of their parents and their relatives. (DJ 3000 aka Frank Juncaj), is no different. Born and raised in the Detroit enclave of Hamtramck, he was inundated with both the sights and sounds of his neighbourhood (a highly ethnic area of Detroit), as well as with the influence of the music of his parent’s native Albanian background. This diverse collection of influence has moulded the current make-up of both DJ 3000 and the vision and direction of his Motech Label.

DJ 3000 discovered the rich history of Detroit Techno by going straight to the source. Through a friend he was introduced to the world of 2030 (one of Detroit’s most famous outlets for electronic music), and thus to the world of Underground Resistance, and hasn’t looked back since. He fell in with the Submerge crew and moved forward from there. He began DJ’ing around Detroit and was soon introduced to the world via his numerous releases on highly respected underground labels. He also DJs in the USA, Europe and Asia regularly.

In 2001, DJ 3000 went a step further by establishing Motech Records, and began releasing a new hybrid of Techno/Electro/Funk with the soul of Albanian and Middle Eastern rhythms, that the world had never seen before. Through his own releases, and through collaborations and contributions from some of the best up-and-coming Detroit producers, Motech has forged its own unique identity, and this mix compilation is a worthy snapshot of his very individual style.

Jimmy Van M releases Balance add-on “10.1″

Posted by admin on September 27th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

cell phone

Jimmy Van M returns to Australia’s EQ recordings, after the successful release of ‘Balance 10′ with a follow-up mix, logically entitled Balance 10.1. Whereas its predecessor was mostly focused on a warmup ambience, the latest installment is more of a peak time set, once again featuring some of today’s hottest tracks.

The mix starts off in style with an ambient intro written exclusively for the CD by Russian artists Moonbeam, as heard before on Traum, setting the mood in preparation for a journey through deep and haunting sounds, which is highlighted by the Radioslave remix of Unkle’s - ‘Burn My Shadow’.

cell phoneFrom here everything starts to take shape with more energy and atmosphere once wunderkind Stephen Bodzin’s neo-trancer ‘Cucuma’ bursts into the mix. Other highlights on the disc include Smith & Selway’s driving remix of Mauro Picotto and the stunning Moonbeam remix of Steve T ‘There were Lights’, alongside a rework from man of the moment Guy Gerber, and Holland’s pride Francesco Pico.

Van M, garnered fame as a connaisseur DJ, with an ear for the unknown. According to one of his friends (John Digweed)

“Jimmy is one of those DJs that when I hear him play, I always want to know the majority of his tracks. He has an incredible ear to search out undiscovered music and programme it in a way to mess with your mind. In my opinion Jimmy is up there with the best”

Tracklist:

01. Moonbeam - Uaret

02. Planet Funk - Static (Martin Buttrich Vocal mix)

03. Unkle ft Ian Astbury - Burn My Shadow (Radioslave remix)

04. Dave Shokh & Holgi Star - Lirum

05. Stephan Bodzin - Cucuma

06. Zidan Style, Chaim & K300 - Bedloff (Guy Gerber remix)

07. Mouse Down - Sexy 4 All

09. Mauro Picotto - Maybe, Maybe Not (Smith & Selway remix)

10. Umek - Carbon Occassions

Poker Flat chief Steve Bug steps up to mix the latest installment in the Fabric series, “Fabric 37″

Posted by admin on September 26th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

cell phone

Innovator, minimal dance connoisseur, tech house master - though he’s been given many prestigious titles, if there’s one quality that can be best attributed to Steve Bug, it would be modesty.

It’s a trait that has followed him throughout his illustrious career, from his early days as a child building guitars out of cardboard, to his early lessons in percussion at school (“ In school, I was always forced to play percussion ” my teachers wouldn’t give me the flute or any other instrument ” I didn’t even get the full kit ” just the drum sticks and maybe a triangle!”), to his beginnings as a mixtape DJ (“I’d never really thought of playing in clubs; I was only really recording tapes for myself”), to his first productions (“The first few productions set my course - Tobias really liked them and wanted to put them out. I was a bit unsure as, like the mixtapes from years ago, they were more for me, not to impress others.”). Despite the fact that he’s now largely regarded as one of the founding fathers of minimal ” creating his ‘Da Minimal Funk’ compilation over 10 years ago ” and one of the most sought-after 4/4 DJs booked today, Bug remains truly humble when reflecting on the majestic rise from his beginnings as a dancefloor-dwelling clubber in Bremen, Germany to ruling his renowned Dessous/Poker Flat empire in Berlin.

cell phone

“I had a kick start [because of Rising High], but it didn’t really help my career. Not that many people were interested or noticed that anything was happening besides hard techno / trance. I did a couple of more tracks for Superstition and a few parties but the rest of the label was moving in a different direction than I was. Not feeling comfortable with being part of a collective that had nothing to do with me and the music I was into, we decided to form a new label and forum for other artists who shared my musical taste and to give them a platform to express themselves also. We rethought Raw Elements and decided to start all over again with a new fresh concept. That’s how Poker Flat was born, with ‘Loverboy’ as our first release.” ” Steve Bug

Steve first caught the bug when, after being stuck in the commercial-minded clubland of Bremen for his formative years, a road trip over to Hamburg brought on his first exploration into Chicago house. Soon, trips to Hamburg became more and more frequent, and trips to record shops became his life. Eventually, his obsessive curiosity about US house and disco music saw him hop the pond to be directly immersed in it all ” he ended up in New York, for a life-changing trip that introduced him to a variety of friends that he still holds dear to this day. Upon returning home three months later, with a whole new back catalogue of influences, a full address book and a fresh perspective, Bug and his friends began throwing a weekly party at Bremen’s largest club, Maxx. These themed parties (“Heaven And Hell,” “Rome Is Burning,” “Party Til The Doctor Comes,” to name a few) led to Bug securing a residency at Maxx and, not long after, residencies the globe over. These days, as a DJ, producer and label owner, Bug is credited as being a fundamental instigator in the movement of house, techno and that ever-present word, minimal, in Europe.

cell phone

On fabric 37, Steve Bug moves flawlessly in and out of lush, seductive 4/4 grooves with impeccable grace, while managing to delicately straddle the borders of techno and house, both legs dancing on either side of the fine line throughout the 70 minutes. The lively funk-based collection of tracks expands subtly and develops to climaxing heights, rendering a mix as effective in a dark warehouse as it is a fantastic headphone companion. Laced with hypnotising, elegant selections, fabric 37 builds on poppy riffs, swelling synths and contagious melodies. Catch the bug and indulge in the kind of infectious mix that gets more addictive with each listen.

“I wanted to make the fabric mix atmospheric, with the occasional track where things go off! I think it typifies a set at fabric. When I was doing the Bugnology series, I was trying to compile all the records I was playing at that time. However, the mix for fabric will be much more influenced by my sets in fabric: it will be a perfect snapshot of how I play at the club.” ” Steve Bug

Minus presents “EXPANSION / contraction” release and album tour

Posted by admin on September 26th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

cell phoneOf the continuing themes found throughout the music released on MINUS, one constant exploration is the relationship between Sound and Silence. Within the stripped down but dimensional outcome there exists a polarity that is neither controlled nor accidental, where life imitates art in between the notes. The act of finding inspiration from a sonic molecule or the inaudible space around that element is the nature of EXPANSION | contraction.

Dubfire (Ali, ex-Deep Dish) enters the EXPANSION with the tremendous “Emissions”. This is his first track to be released on Minus and is the culmination of his gravitation towards the Minus sound cemented by a friendship over the years with label head Richie Hawtin. Gaiser again hits the mark with “Mute”, which captures the excitement of his storming live shows throughout 2007 and is taken from the sessions that spawned his forthcoming double pack release “Eye Contact” (M54). Currently ‘on fire’ Marc Houle continues his own musical expansion with “Porch”, following up and going beyond his “Extreme” (Items and Things 02) and the monstrous “Techno Vocals/On It” (M50) double-header.

Plastikman’s “Risk Assessment” begins the contraction with a simmering builder of a track guaranteed to disconcert even the most sonically prepared of listeners. Jesse Siminski aka Heartthrob is right back on form and contributes the growling funk beast that is “Roundabout”. While JPLS’s “Isolate” contracts further and establishes him as one of the darker elements on the Minus roster, his soon-come Minus EP “Fuckshuffle” (M57) bears testament to his highly developed sound.

Troy Pierce’s gargantuan “Oxytocin” (CD only) takes up the gauntlet thrown down by his own twisted “Gone Astray” (M52) release from the summer, and wraps up the CD somewhere exactly in-between the concept where EXPANSION | contraction first started.

Evidently, the listener can discern here that all the artists featured on Expansion | contraction are fully experimenting with the balance, interaction and interplay between these two opposing forces. To complement the music on this release, the accompanying artwork maps out the boundless possibilities of in-between potential.

Limited edition double pack vinyl format features a specially embossed sleeve and black/white vinyl, reflecting the duality of the EXPANSION | contraction concept.

CD format also features embossed artwork and contains an extra track, Troy Pierce’s “Oxytocin.”

Toolroom Knights return with the next instalment of their DJ-led mix albums, this time with Gabriel & Dresden

Toolroom Knights return with the next instalment of their DJ-led mix albums. Reflecting the underground sound of the label, this time round mixing duties have been bestowed upon producer/DJ duo Gabriel & Dresden, who prove here why fans and critics have hailed them as the future sound of electronic music. Voted ‘Best American DJ’ at this year’s Winter Music Conference International Dance Music Award (IDMA), an already amazing year for the pair is now capped off in fine style with the unveiling of Toolroom Knights, Volume 2.

Exploring a more organic and textural musical landscape on this double disc collection, G&D adeptly blend sounds from indie rock band Junior Boys to Claude Von Stroke, Apparat, and The Knife. This collection brings the debut of Gabriel & Dresden’s popular remix of the Killers “Read My Mind,” and includes exclusive tracks such as Gabriel & Dresden’s re-interpretation of label boss Mark Knight’s (with D. Ramirez) “Columbian Soul,” their remix of Monochrome “Pearl,” and Shlomi Aber & Itamar Sagi’s “Blonda.” Unreleased Josh Gabriel tracks “Summit” and “Crosstalk” gives a peak into the solo records he’s quietly making.

Reconstructing and editing most tracks for this album, the San Francisco based duo have spent an age putting together this exceptional two disc mix, carefully selecting tracks that encapsulate the true sound of Gabriel & Dresden right now as DJ’s. Each CD takes you on a journey, evoking different moods and emotions. This is an exciting release for both Toolroom Records & Gabriel & Dresden, and an exceptional music lesson for all who listen.

“When asked whether we would be interested in doing a compilation for Toolroom, we immediately said yes! We knew that this forward thinking label would be the perfect platform to release tracks that had never been heard outside a club, and capture the musical diversity and inspiration of our DJ sets.” ” Gabriel & Dresden

Watch-out for Toolroom Knights at this year’s Amsterdam Dance Event, 18th October @ Cineac with Mark Knight, Gabriel & Dresden, Dean Ramierez & Dave Spoon. Old school electro meets new school electro on the latest in the ‘Kings of…’ mix CD series mixed by Playgroup & Alter Ego

Posted by admin on September 21st, 2007 under Club Dance Music

Next release in the excellent KINGS OF… series following albums from David Rodigan and Sting Interntational (Kings of Reggae), Carl Craig and Laurent Garnier (Kings of Techno), Kon and Amir (Kings of Diggin’), Gilles Peterson and Jazzanova (Kings of Jazz), Masters At Work (Kings of House) DJ Premier and Mr Thing (Kings of Hip Hop), Keb Darge and Rza (Kings of Funk), Dimitri From Paris and Joey Negro (Kings of Disco). London’s Trevor Jackson (Playgroup) handles the old school electro whilst Germany’s Alter Ego brings the new school.

PLAYGROUP (aka Trevor Jackson) selection: “The History”

Trevor delves deep into his own extensive collection, digging up tracks that range from early NY classics from the likes of Fearless Four and Dynamix 2 to Detroit (Model 500) and Europe (Deee-Lite & Visage) A classic selection and impeccably mixed.

PLAYGROUP: Trevor Jackson is a London based creative, working in many fields including graphic design, art direction, moving image, music writing, remixing and production, installations and performance.

His career began in the early 90’s forming the design company Bite It! creating record covers for early dance and hip hop releases for the Stereo MC’s, Jungle Brothers and Todd Terry. After setting up his first label - the independent hip hop label Bite It! Recordings - in 1991, Jackson ventured into record production and remixing. Using the Underdog name, he became successful remixing artists such as Massive Attack, U2 and UNKLE, and also producing multicultural British rap act the Brotherhood.

In 1996 Trevor formed a new label Output Recordings, introducing artists such as Four Tat, Black Strobe, Colder MU, Circle square, The Rapture, LCD Sound system as well as his own acclaimed Playgroup project. Output was recognized as one of the UK’s most fiercely independent and creatively groundbreaking labels, releasing uncompromising yet accessible new music of many genres. A cover story in Jockey Slut magazine (2003) cited Output as this decades equivalent to the legendary Factory records label.

Jackson’s DJ skills were showcased on the 2002 released DJ Kicks album (K7!) and many of his latest remixes for Yellow, Franz Ferdinand, Layton, The Rapture, Soft Cell and Tom Vek can be listened to on his 2004 released Playgroup Reproductions Remix CD (Peacefrog).

Trevor continues to create music and artwork and is always working on diverse range of projects. His campaign for the Belgium band Soulwax won various awards including the 2004 Tokyo TDC non members prize, a D&AD sliver pencil nomination, and Creative Review’s best in book. Features and selections of his work have appeared in publications such as Index, IDN, Special 10, Tokion, Grafik as well as being included in the Guggenheim Museum’s exhibition on minimalism, “Singular Forms (Sometimes Repeated) Art from 1951 to the Present.” Trevor is currently working on the long awaited new Playgroup album due for release in late 2007.

Following on from the success of ‘Crop Duster’ and current single ‘Moods’, Renaissance and Shlomi Aber continue their close-knit relationship to release their first artist album together ” State Of No One. “It felt right taking this step,” says Shlomi, “We both wanted to keep the traditional dance stuff to a minimum and do something a little different. The idea of producing a whole album of beautiful (hopefully!) electronica really appealed to me.” And the prodigious Israeli has been true to his word. Over 12 tracks totalling 50 minutes, he demonstrates a fresh, exciting new angle to his production cannon.

From the haunting swell of opening track ‘Looking In God’s Eyes’, the album quickly confirms this is electronic music at its contemporary best, a marriage of Shlomi’s distinct production technique, local influence and collaboration. On ‘Eastern Breeze’ he draws on the sound of rare, domestic instrument from the Yemen, the ‘Oud’, to create a suggestive piece of audio espionage, whilst ‘Don’t Be A Fool’ tips a wink to Thom Yorke with vocalist Guy Mantzur’s (who’s previously recorded tracks for 6 Feet Under, Nip / Tuck and MTV’s The Real World) seductive lyrics juxtaposed against glitched melody and fractured beats. ‘Moods’ shows up in a brand new guise, recorded exclusively for the album, as does ‘Sea Of Sand’, Shlomi’s famed Guy Gerber co-production. As the album rounds toward the finale, ‘Random Fiction’ provides a fitting platform to showcase the exquisite vocals of Anat Ben Homo.

‘State Of No One’ is undoubtedly one of the most exciting new albums of 2007, one that excites, challenges and surprises in equal measure. “It’s contemporary chill-out I guess,” Shlomi elaborates, “But I’m not so bothered about finding a genre for it, I just hope people like it at the end of the day.”
