An Interview with Producer/DJ Sultan

Posted by admin on November 10th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

Club DanceMontreal, Canada has a reputation for being one of the world’s infamous party capitals. The cities French infused scene is driven by a large population of young people that enjoy partying hard until the wee hours of the morning on any given night. Vital to the development of Montreal’s modern clubbing scene is DJ / Producer Sultan. Since bursting out of the Montreal scene in 2000, Sultan has gone on to be a huge presence both locally and internationally. His tracks have appeared on countless numbers of top-quality compilations and he’s forged a wonderful relationship with Deep Dish and their famed Yoshitoshi Recordings. This relationship breeds Sultan’s first ever solo compilation in tribute to the city that he holds dear to heart. Featuring Sultan’s own original productions, remixes and mashups of tracks from other respected artists, Yoshitoshi Montreal is both the perfect representation of Sultan’s skills and the Montreal vibe.More than any of the other recently released Yoshitoshi mix compilations Yoshitoshi Montreal perfectly showcases the DJ as an artist. Sultan’s mixing capabilities are off the chart and he’s added much of his very own flavor to the programming. Appearing on the compilation is Sultan & Ned Shepard exclusive original production “Aidan” which has been heavily supported by the likes of Paul Van Dyk, Deep Dish and Hernan Cattaneo. The track sits along side Sultan’s remixes of his own Shinichi classic “No Why” and G-Pal’s “No Other Man” and two new unreleased Sultan mashups of Valentino’s “Flying” with Narcotic Thrust’s “Waiting For You” and Joe T Vanelli’s Epic “Prelude.” Other tracks touched by Sultan include his beat rework of 16 bit Lolita’s hit “Passing Lights” and Ned Shepard’s brand new remix of Sultan’s classic “Night Visions.” Rounding out this great mix are previously unreleased tunes from Yoshitoshi newcomers Lee Wharton & Jay Lloyd, Spanish superstars Spider & Legaz and Sam Perez and Brusca.Preceded by Behrouz and Miss Nine’s separate installments of Yoshitoshi Ibiza and Cedric Gervais’ Yoshitoshi Miami, Yoshitoshi Montreal is the latest volume in a popular CD series to come from legendary dance music label Yoshitoshi Recordings. Throughout the years Yoshitoshi and its sister imprints have released numerous worldwide hits and is responsible for jumpstarting the careers of many heavy hitters in the dance music industry.Club DancemK: What is the significance of your name, Sultan? How did you get that name?Sultan: Sultan is a nick name my mother and friends gave me a couple years back. I was growing my hair out and used to always wear a hat that resembled a turban. That coupled with my long Go-T at the time got them calling me Sultan. It stuck ;->mK: What first drew your attention to dance music?Sultan: My best friend in university, Miche, first drew my attention to dance music. At the time I used to be in a rock band and pretty much only listened to rock music. Miche and I used to cruise around the city in his car all the time and he would always be playing different music including dance music. At the same time, another good friend of mine, Ali Ajami, was djing and used to pass me tapes and cds of dance music to listen to.mK: Who and what are your influences?Sultan: So many influences. Grunge and Rock were my biggest influences growing up. At the same time I was always drawn to the trip hop scene with bands like Massive Attack and Portishead. When I first got into dance music, Northern Exposure by Sasha & Digweed was the cd I listened to most. Ned Shepard, my production partner, as well as Zara Taylor have exposed me to so much music aside from dance music lately and it’s been really refreshing and inspiring.mK: What was the first house record that you ever bought and when did you start mixing on the turntables?Sultan: Hmmm, if I remember correctly the first record I bought was Paul Van Dyke ” Words. Around late 2000 was when I first really started mixing on turntables.Club DancemK: You are currently on tour for your Yoshitoshi Montreal compilation, how do you feel about that?Sultan: I’m loving it! And so happy to be able to travel the world and play so many shows pushing the compilation. I’m really proud of the cd and it’s always a pleasure to be able to share the music and the experience with the crowds.mK: How did you choose the songs for this compilation? Was it an easy process?Sultan: The process was definitely not easy mainly due to the fact that I had to choose strictly Yoshitoshi, shinichi and YO! Songs. In a way that really narrowed my selection so you might think it would have been easier however, due to the limitation in selection and due to the fact that several other Yoshitoshi compilations have used a lot of tracks from the Yoshi back catalogue it actually made it more challenging.

I first went through the entire back catalogue of Yoshitoshi and sister labels to see which tracks I really loved and wanted to use. I chose more than 40 songs then slowly started to narrow it down. I then asked Yoshi to send me any unreleased tunes they had coming up. At that point I also chose a few songs that I really loved and thought of remixing or reworking for the comp.mK: You currently moved in to a new studio, can you describe us the whole setting? Which is your favorite equipment at the moment?Sultan: Since February this year Ned and I have really worked on tuning up our studio. We got a new location and I just recently acquired the full HD 3 full Protools system. It’s honestly becoming my dream studio. Not only do we have great gear but we have invested into acoustic sound proofing and a great comfortable atmosphere that just makes you want to stay in the studio 24hrs a day. Being in the studio is an addiction!

I’d say my virus B and TI synths are my favourite.mK: You also started to play guitar (again) for Nadia Ali live show before continuing the night with a DJ set. How do you find this experience?Sultan: It’s been an incredible experience! It has been a great compliment for both of our shows (Nadia and I) and I think as a package it has definitely intrigued a lot of people. The live aspect of the show is a whole other experience from the Dj aspect for me. One thing I always missed with Djing was playing my guitar like I used to back in the days with my band. And now to be able to do both, well let me tell you, it’s a dream come true!mK: Your own radio show is broadcasted through DI.fm and Danceradio.gr, your releases can be downloaded through iTunes and Beatport, how do you feel about the digital era we are going through?Sultan: The Digital era is the Era we live in now and its definitely here to stay. I think it has many benefits as well as downfalls however the key in the end is to adapt to the new medium and look forward rather than behind. A lot has changed in the scene due to the digital revolution but those who have been able to adjust to it have seen and will definitely see the benefits it has to offer. Radio is a great example of the benefits of the digital era. And with great stations like Danceradio.gr not only are we able to reach a broader audience, the audience is able to access a broader variety of music.mK: It’s almost impossible not to ask, is there any secret behind those dreads?Sultan: The secret to dreads, well mine at least, is patience and thick hair haha.mK: What more should we expect from Sultan in the near future?Sultan: Lots to expect. Ned Shepard and I have recently co produced and co written 6 tracks for Nadia Ali’s forthcoming solo album. We also just completed a remix for the first single off her album. I am currently working on remixing the first single from Matt Darey’s forthcoming album and Ned and I will be launching our record label, Harem Records within the next couple of months. Aside from all that, more tour support for my compilation “Yoshitoshi Montreal”.mK: Thanks for your time Sultan, wish you all the best!

Sultan: Thank You!(mK interview for danceradio.gr)References: http://www.myspace.com/sultansoultan, http://djsultan.com, http://www.danceradio.gr

Introducing the new CDJ-400 deck, a flexible, affordable feature-packed performance player for the aspiring club DJ to use at home

Posted by admin on November 8th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

Club DanceDesigned by DJs for DJs and drawing inspiration from Pioneer’s industry standard CDJ-1000 series, this latest member of the world-famous CDJ family is fully geared up to serve the next generation of digital artists. The CDJ-400 allows DJs to play their MP3 collection off CD-R/RW discs as well as music from mass storage USB devices, such as USB keys, external hard drives and portable media devices [1]. The deck also features the world’s first Scratch Jog Effects [2], with three creative scratch effects and an amazing new Loop Divide function. Virtually all of the button and slider functions can send MIDI data via USB output, making it possible for the decks to control DJ software and other applications, such as Pioneer DJS [3] or Serato Scratch LIVE [4] on a PC or MAC. The CDJ-400 deck is a perfect partner for the DJM-400 mixer and together they provide the ultimate home party set”up.‘With USB, MP3 and MIDI support, the world’s first Scratch Jog Effects and inspirational looping abilities, the CDJ-400 has been designed to keep DJs in tune with the latest digital developments, adding new levels of performance to their sets,’ says Jason Pook, European Product Development Manager, Pioneer Europe.Club DanceKey Features :Digital media playback

The CDJ-400 handles CD Audio and MP3 files from CD, while USB connectivity lets DJs draw upon sound libraries on external storage devices [5]. Through the new push-selection Rotary Scroll Wheel and Back Button, users can navigate files and folders as simply and quickly as on many of the leading portable media players available today.MIDI control via USB

With Pioneer’s finger firmly on the pulse of digital DJ developments, it is only natural that the CDJ-400 can control DJ and music application software. This is achieved by simply selecting the PC Source Select button, so that virtually all of the deck’s buttons and slider can send MIDI control data via the PC USB connection. So when MIDI is the message, the CDJ-400 definitely delivers. For example, a DJ can connect the CDJ-400 to a PC or MAC and play and manipulate files from their favourite DJ application software ” such as Pioneer DJS or Serato Scratch LIVE [4] ” and this doesn’t even require a time-code disc to be used in the deck.New illuminated Jog Wheel

With a design inspired by the club standard CDJ-1000 Jog Wheel comes the CDJ-400’s 115mm illuminated platter. You can choose from six different patterns of Jog Wheel illumination and even personalise your own CDJ ‘slip mats’ or jog sheets [6].New Scratch Jog Effects

In addition to the Digital Jog Break Effects (JET, WAH and ROLL) found in CDJ Mode, Pioneer serves up the world’s first Scratch Jog Effects, BUBBLE, TRANS and WAH, in vinyl mode. BUBBLE simulates a scratch technique and is great for spin backs, while TRANS is like rhythmically transforming with a mixer’s cross fader and WAH resembles the guitar Wah pedal.New Beat Loop Divide

Can you dance to this b-b-beat? Making the magic of live mash-up even more manageable, the funky new Beat Loop Divide facility rhythmically dices loops to fashion beats with drama, intrigue or whatever your desired effect. It is easily adjustable using its (- and +) buttons during loop playback, thereby creating loops with mind-melting, dancefloor-destroying twists.Hot Loop and Beat Loop

Besides the Beat Loop Divide, the CDJ-400 lets DJs create flawless four-beat Beat Loops and Hot Loops. For the latter hit the Hot Loop (In/Out point) buttons during a loop to retrigger the loop. Up to 10 Cue/Loop points per disc, for up to 920 discs, can be stored in memory and transferred by usb key between CDJ-400s.Other key features:* Tempo range settings available: ±6…, ±10…, ±16… and WIDE [7]
