Junkie XL announces details for new studio album “Booming Back At You” set for release March 11, 2008.

Posted by admin on December 14th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

Club DanceWith the arrival of his fifth proper studio album, Dutch-born musician, producer and remixer JUNKIE XLBooming Back At You (Tom Holkenborg) has crafted a disc that not only builds on his beloved back catalog but also builds a bridge with today’s vibrant new school of dance-rock music. Due out March 11, 2008, will be released as the first offering from Artwerk Music“the record label started by Electronic Arts (EA) in conjunction with Nettwerk Music Group. “In the past, I always made conceptual records or tried to find a theme. But I’m such an energetic performer, very upbeat, and I wanted to capture that,” states Junkie XL. “This album throws that vibe right back at the fans.” The album’s first single is “More,” the lead track from the EA game Need For Speed Pro Street TM featuring Lauren Rocket, front-woman for emerging LA all-girl rock outfit Rocket which has been dazzling dance floors around the world. Other songs on the album include: “Cities In Dust,” a cover of Siouxsie & the Banshees modern rock classic also with vocals by Lauren Rocket; “Booming Right At You” which features Tommy Vext (who sings in Divine Heresy with ex-Fear Factory guitarist Dino Cazares) and utilizes a snippet of Stetsasonic’s 1988 hip-hop classic “DBC Let The Music Play” to make the track uplifting and soulful as it is inventive; and “1967 Poem,” a hard-slamming dance floor burner produced in collaboration with Hollywood superstar DJ and Dim Mak label maverick Steve Aoki.On Booming Back At You, Junkie has also found joy by partnering with young up-and-coming talents like Rocket, Vext and Electrocute vocalist Nicole Morier, who has three co-writing credits and had a significant role in shaping the disc. Of her sultry delivery to the jazzy, gritty “Mad Pursuit,” Junkie says, “Nicole did such a wonderful job on it. And it gives the record a different energy than it might otherwise possess. It reminds me of something that should be in a Tarantino film.” There’s also the ground-quaking “Clash” which seems like the ideal tune to supplant Gary Glitter’s “Rock & Roll Part II” at sporting events; a instantly catchy pop song “Not Enough” (which features vocals by Gus Seyffert); the direct, irresistible melody “New Toy”; and the funky “Stump” “which boasts a hook built around 1950’s film dialogue. The prolific, Venice, California-based Holkenborg’s solo efforts also include 1998’s Saturday Teenage Kick, 2000’s Big Sounds of the Drags, 2003’s Radio JXL: A Broadcast from the Computer Hell Cabin and 2006’s Today. Radio JXL: A Broadcast from the Computer Hell Cabin included collaborations with Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan, Gary Numan, Robert Smith from The Cure, and Public Enemy’s Chuck D. and featured his breakthrough collaboration with the late Elvis Club DancePresley. When he reworked The King’s moderately successful 1968 single “A Little Less Conversation” for a 2002 Nike World Cup Commercial, the updated version unexpectedly catapulted Junkie into the spotlight. The song became a #1 hit in more than 20 countries. An electronic music jack-of-all-trades, Junkie XL has established himself as a world famous club remixer who has turned out epic takes on tracks by the likes of Britney Spears (most recently his remix of “Gimme More” appears on her album Blackout), Coldplay, Justin Timberlake, Scissor Sisters, Rammstein, the aforementioned Fear Factory, Bloc Party, Sarah McLachlan and Avril Lavigne. He also keeps extremely busy creating the music for video games contributing music to “The Sims 2: Nightlife,” Xbox games “Forza Motorsport” and “Quantum Redshift,” as well as Electronic Art’s “Burnout,” “SSX Blur” and “Need For Speed” series. An extension of that affiliation, Booming Back at You marks a new partnership with Artwerk, the record label started by Electronic Arts in conjunction with Nettwerk Music Group. Although the video game scoring and record deals don’t technically intertwine and the respective companies are separate, Junkie says he is ecstatic to be working for EA and Artwerk. “It’s such a forward thinking arrangement,” he says. “These guys are way more advanced and ahead of the game when it comes to thinking about what you can use music for these days. Aside from gaming, there’s digital distribution, and just thinking how to market and approach getting my music out there in an untraditional way.”The complete track listing for “Booming Back At You” is:1. “Cultured girl” by Martino, with vocals by Syreeta Neal, gets the long awaited remix treatment. By the hands of Martino and Karizma, the song gets a deep and hypnotic vibe, resulting in a lovely rework. Club DanceGenetix Screwface CityShines Rec.

On “Screwface city“ Gene King a.k.a. Genetix has chosen to turn the bpm knob up a bit - but don’t worry, he kept those characteristic organ sounds and dreamy landscapes we love. The West mix offers a warm, bubbly synthloop and the most uplifting, light-hearted mood in this package. The East mix goes to explore the deeper and orbital shades of the track, together with some underground house synth. The Plusgroove remix is more stripped-down, comes with some excentric percussion and an intense electronic loop which creates a hypnotic atmosphere. Excellent work as always, a release which will fit just as comfortably on the dancefloor as for pure listening pleasure. Reviewed by Nikkisample1 > West Mixsample2 > East Mixsample3 > Plusgroove Mix

An Interview with DJ/Producer Umek

Posted by admin on December 8th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

Club DanceUros Umek is internationally acclaimed deejay and music producer from Slovenia, seducing the masses with his own music blend for more than a decade. Always on the look for new sounds and determined to challenge every existing cliché in music industry, he managed to define his own vision of vanguard techno. Sure, this would not happen without the support of his loyal peers who’ve joined him on the production platforms such as Recycled Loops, Consumer Recreation and Astrodisco, with which they defined “Slovenian techno sound” and successfully it as an important driving force on the global club scene. He started his journey to the stardome as an excellent athlete, running between two baskets, but it was Euterpe the Muse of music and poetry that paved Umek’s life-path. She got him totally unprepared, seduced him with no further notice, so he had no chance of getting out of her treads. He devoted his life, his heart, all of his passion and energy, to the sounds he discovered as a teenager. Pioneering the genre he became one of its most appreciated ambassadors with faithful worldwide audience simply known as The Father (of Slovenian techno).Sleeping on past achievements was never Umek’s thing. So it’s nosurprise he decided for complete renovation of his sound and live set performance though being steady member of Top 100 DJ lists for almost a decade. The year 2007 marks beginning of a new chapter in his music career. After spending enormous amount of time and artistic energy bringing his characteristic sound to the whole new level, he presented new international music therapy called 1605 ” Sixteenofive. No doubt this was a very risky move. But it was the only way for him to stay on top of the game. And it seems he made the right decision at the crucial time: the response to his new vision of electronic dance music from his peers, critics, media and most importantly his fans is great and his production is supported by some top names in the industry.Club DancemK: Why people call you “Votter” in Slovenia?

Umek:
Because I am on the scene for so long and I was one of the pioneers of the electronic scene here in Slovenia.mK: How things started with you and techno? How did you discover your sound?

Umek:
It started with acid house a long time ago when I had 11 or 12 years. I just loved those sounds. Compared to music you could hear on our radio stations at that time the sound was very different. . Even years latter the electronic music was really rare on our radio stations. But things changed in the last few years, finally!!!!mK: What’s your fondest memory of a night on your first steps?

Umek:
I still remember my first DJ experience. I was always watching a friend of mine while he was djing and one day he just asked me out of nowhere if I wanted to play. Of course I said yes so he gave me the headphones and he went to the bar.. I was so confused but somehow I managed to bring a set to the end .. hehehehe.mK: Who inspired you to pursue techno music as your production style?

Umek:
I was really into Westbam´s early stuff and Surgeon´s work between 1996-97, but these days I get my musical inspiration from playing in clubs all around the world.Club DancemK: What’s your favorite piece of studio gear?

Umek:
Definitely Logic and ReaktormK: What software do you use in the studio, Protools? Logic? Cubase?

Umek:
Logic, Reaktor and a lot of soft synths. I am completely digital now.mK: What is the most frustrating aspect of production?

Umek:
Not finding track parts when I need them:)mK: How did you react to Radio1 asking you to mix the latest Essential Mix? How did you choose the tracklisting?

Umek:
I was really excited and I knew I had to do a really good mix. I do so many radio shows these days and I do not want to repeat the tracks so I had to be really careful with what I choose.

I was going for a mix with combined techno, electro and house as a base platform and with some minimal DJ tools on top. I think I managed to do what I intended and I am proud of it:)mK: Lately you’ve done the Oldies Goldies Event at Fun Factory in Slovenia, how was it? Which is your favorite gig location?

Umek:
This event was great . It always is. Club was sold out and a lot of people could not get in at all. In Slovenia we do not have so many clubs but there are always K4 and Factory.mK: Who are some of your favorite producers on the scene?

Umek:
Just check my charts hehehe. At the moment we have some new Slovenian producers which I think will go big soon: Andrew Technique, Tomy DeClerque, Aneuria, Robert G Roy…..

wait a bit and you will be surprised.mK: Is there an artist that you would like to work with?

Umek:
I cannot think of one right now but I would love to do an interesting remix and I am always open for cooperation.mK: Do you prefer DJing or working in the studio?

Umek:
I love both: cannot live without DJing and I cannot live without producing.mK: Everyone has a favorite song, one that they always “come back to” over time, what’s yours, and why?

Umek:
That is changing all the time. I get bored of a certain track after a while.mK: What’s on your studio right now? Future releases include…

Umek:
I did a lot of tracks lately so I will have some nice releases coming out within next months. EPs on Astrodisco, Renaissance, Circle Music, Pacha label and together with Matthew Hoag on Little Mountain……. a lot hehehemK: Is it true that you date policewomen?

Umek:
hehehehmK: I know you’re a busy guy, whether you’re at work in the studio or DJing thanks a lot for your time.

Umek:
No problem. I had fun doing itClub DanceReferences: http://www.umek.si/, http://www.myspace.com/djumek, http://www.danceradio.gr/

Miss Kittin set to release her second solo album “BatBox” on her own Nobody’s Bizzness imprint.

Posted by admin on December 8th, 2007 under Club Dance Music

Club DanceMiss Kittin is set to release her 2nd solo album “BatBox” in January ‘08 and its first single “Kittin Is High” in November ‘07 on her label “Nobody’s Bizzness”. The first single off the forthcoming Miss Kittin album, “BatBox”, represents the opening track from her highly anticipated second solo album, the single contains two substantial remixes of “Kittin is High”. Norwegian underground talent Black Labelle have delivered a linear “9/11” version; tense, brooding and dismantled to its most essential club elements. They then carefully rebuild the track over the course of ten minutes.Fellow DJ playmate and NagNagNag resident, JoJo de Freq’s “Beauty is Terror” mix frames Kittin’s lyricswithin a big, bouncing, acid-tinged bassline, interspersed with Euro-synth stabs. Each mix further highlights Miss Kittin’s prominence as a key figure in the underground dance music scene. Careful now… “Vampires are asleep, Witches are taking over”“Kittin is High” is out on Nobody’s Bizzness in late November 2007: 12“ single and digital download out on 30th November.Club DanceTracklist for “Kittin is High”:A:“9/11” Mix by Black Labelle
