Club DanceNomumbahLike a Rainbow Sonar Kollektiv

One year ago, Jazzanova and the Sonar Kollektiv crew released the compilation “Paz e Futebol” to showcase the great names of the Brazilian music scene alongside lesser known artists, such as the band Amanita, who released the beautiful “Like A Rainbow”’, perhaps the rarest number on the mentioned compilation. In order to give this amazing Brazilian song a second wind without betraying the true feelings it carried, they had to find another Brazilian band producing soulful music with many influences. They found exactly what they were looking for in 3-piece ensemble Nomumbah (Ale Reis, André Torquato and Rafael Moraes) from Sao Paulo. Included on the recent compilation “Beats, Bites & Oxle”, this beautiful song receives now a proper vinyl release, including a dub version.

Club Dance

.”I hope house will maintain the sound akin where it is right now. Not for years have I heard djs have as much freedom within the usual boundaries as today. It’s far more dancefloor then it’s been in years, and we need to maintain that it all goes together. I don’t want to hear pretty shit all the time, I don’t want to hear techy shit all the time, I don’t want to hear ethnic shit all the time… I want to hear it all, all the time.”

.What does a good dj entail for you? Would you consider yourself as one of those?.

A good dj to me is one that understands there are no boundaries. One that’s technically proficient but understands that’s the least of his/her skills. One that doesn’t play the same damned music all night long. As much as I love it all, I want to hear it all…deep, soulful, techy, house classics, loft & garage, real classics, afro-beat, techno, midtempo, the works. But most importantly and above all else, a good dj is a dj who ROCKS the crowd, however they have to, within their repertoire. Would I consider myself one? I hope so. I’m forever the student, so if not now, then one day..

Could you tell us how you got into music and about the beginning of your career?
.

I’ve always loved music in general, it’s always been a huge part of my life. I first got into dj’ing around high school via a friend who’s sister & her boyfriend were doing a lot of parties in the area then (boston). I steadily escalated in my pursuit until I finally realized one day that I would never be happy if I didn’t dedicate my life to music, and thus dropped out of college to dedicate myself full time. .

Quoting from your biography, your dj sets feature disco, funk, soul, jazz & techno based dance music with African and Latin rhythms, what music did you grow up with and what music has influenced you? .

hahaha - Well, I’m not one of the cats you read about in interviews that has always listened to the most amazing music, and who’s parents seemed to offer them the real shit on a platter when growing up. I mean hell, I barely knew who stevie wonder was when I was growing up. But, I loved music, all kinds. Rock, 80’s pop, disco, punk, radio rnb & hip hop, classical, opera…the whole nine. My first concert was willie nelson, if that tells you anything. But I always felt this powerful draw to house music, to soul, to the real classics. I suppose my move was inevitable..

How do you prepare for a dj - set?
.

Listen, listen, listen..

Tell us about the “One” events that you host, what they are about and could you describe the atmosphere at these events?
.

ONE was intended as and has become over it’s life a tight knit community of like minded individuals, whether they know each other or not, who all love to gather together and celebrate life. Some of the most amazing parties and vibes I’ve ever experienced in my entire life have been at ONE–parties that have even brought some of the guest djs to tears, no joke. We’ve gone through our ups & downs, but will always move forward in the end.

.

What do you listen to nowadays? Is it the same music that you play when you are dj-ing? And to what extent does other kinds of music influence your work? . The vast majority of what I listen to is music I would play or am making. When I do get time to listen to anything else, it can vary widely. Many types of world music, dub/reggae/dancehall, acoustic stuff like kings of convenience or anita exira, conscious hip hop like one self, strange fruit project, antedote, crown city rockers, etc, or just hugely creative music I love like back ted-n-ted or the lymbyc systym..How do you think house music will sound in ten years due the different trends we see emerging and due to the commercialisation of the genre?

.

You see commercialization? Thank god it’s about time! hahaha! I hope house will maintain the sound akin where it is right now. Not for years have I heard djs have as much freedom within the usual boundaries as today. It’s far more dancefloor then it’s been in years, and we need to maintain that it all goes together. I don’t want to hear pretty shit all the time, I don’t want to hear techy shit all the time, I don’t want to hear ethnic shit all the time…I want to hear it all, all the time. .

How much do you value reaching out to people through your own music?.That remains to be seen. I try to put a huge amount of my energy into what I do. The music I make (often with my partner Shea Marshall) is often hugely personal for me. I still wait to see what people get from it. .Your first release, “Papago morning”, was a great success on Tribal Winds; how did you react to that? As it’s a quite well-known label, did that help you in somehow?

.

I think it was a help, sure, but it’s been a long road, and it still meanders off well beyond the horizon. It was a blessing for antonio to see what he did in the music and put it forth to the world, and I very much appreciate him for that. .

How would you describe your music?.Personal, emotional, floor moving..Would you say there’s a difference between live music and electronic music?

.

Quality music is quality music. Music to me is the mathematical perception by the brain of the spl transduced by the eardrum. However it’s made, whatever it’s source, good music is good music, and good music for me is defined by the emotion it stirs within me. So the short version I guess would be no. .

Are your productions connected to your dj-ing and the experiences you gain from there?.Absolutely. The more I play the more I hone my production. The more I know floors all over the country the more I know what really makes people move, and write music specifically to that. Early on my music was very intellectual. Now it’s morphing into something much more visceral..What were your first experiences of producing music?.

God, hahaha… fruity loops 1.0 I think. All samples. Terrible, terrible music, but I loved it. I got what I made, even if no one else did, and I trusted myself enough to keep going and keep developing. Trust in yourself and work hard and you WILL get there. As long as you’re not a total asshole, that is. .

What’s coming next, I see a lot of music on your myspace page, what should we be looking out for?.And a whole lot more on the way. This is a list of music either being released now, or to be released by the conference: .jojoflores & Joe DiPadova - Yes Smoke - Deeper Shades Records (2008)Joe DiPadova - Alarm - SEED Recordings (2008)Remixes:Una - The Weekender (Joe DiPadova & Shea Marshall’s Can’t Stop Dub) - Poji Records (2008) Gene King feat. Elise Taylor - Perfect Love (Joe DiPadova Remix) - Getaway Recordings (2008) .

Could you give us a top 10 list of what you will be playing at your next parties?

.Hmm… there’s a reason I rarely do these things. It’s so hard to decide, and it’s all about the right song for the moment. Here’s a few though, aside from my own (note, I’m not about the newest, latest, greatest, just the best): .Dazzle Drums - Elem (Kiko Navarro Reprise)SteveSoulBasics - Kuchwa (Seed In The City Mix)OMAR - Feeling You (Henrik Schwarz Remix)Franck Roger - Rebirth (jojoflores, Anto Vitale, Jason B Edit)Gene King Featuring Sacha - Changes (157 Shelter Records) Jaymz Nylon Feat. Gregor Tresher releases his debut long-player “A Thousand Nights” on Great Stuff

Posted by admin on January 11th, 2008 under Club Dance Music

On October 29th Great Stuff presents ‘A Thousand Nights’, the debut long-player by German producer Gregor Tresher. The album is a collection of deep, dancefloor-orientated tracks, existing somewhere between minimal, tech-house, techno and electro. Add to this dark, trippy atmospherics and the result is a coherent body of quality electronic music. Moving from the understated minimal house of ‘Black Rain’ and subtle menace of ‘Running Systems’, the album slips into the uplifting, dream-like state of ‘A Thousand Nights’ and ‘Painkiller’, the latter reminiscent of deep, mid-nineties prog-house/electronica.With its saw-wave bassline and sparkly riff, anthem ‘Full Range Madness’ was a peak of last year’s ‘Compilation F’ on Cocoon Records, winning support from many top DJs. The gear moves up a considerable notch on the growling, 6am darkness of ‘Anti’ before shifting subtly onto the jerky, click-house-gone-reverb-laden-techno of ‘Benthos’. The album closes with ‘The Good Life’, a classic piece of shiny, deep house.Hailing from the Rhine-Main region of Frankfurt, Gregor sites infl uences including Depeche Mode, Heaven 17, Duran Duran, Placebo, Front 242 and Laurent Garnier. Tresher has experienced a phenomenal rise over the past 3 years: supported by the likes of Anthony Rother, Billy Nasty, Dave Mothersole and Sven Väth, he has released on labels including Datapunk, Cocoon, 541, Kosmo and Electrix.German dance mag ‘Raveline’ gave Gregor the ‘Best Producer Of 2006’ accolade, and ‘Full Range Madness’ also recently featured on the ‘Sexy Techno At Cocoon’ Sven Väth mix CD, free with Mixmag.Tracklist: CD 1

Warp great white hope Clark swaps experimental electronics for the dancefloor on his new longplayer “Turning Dragon”.

Posted by admin on January 6th, 2008 under Club Dance Music

Clark drops his excellent new album. Don’t expect the lullabies and emotional epics of the last album Body Riddle, Turning Dragon is a smasher. Hard, deep, continuously evolving and gritty tracks, aimed at contorting your body on the dancefloor or just contorting your brain. This is an album that you could almost call techno, but techno with the a.d.d. detail pushed as far as it can go. Turning Dragon, a reaction to Body Riddle, is without a doubt influenced by his relentless touring schedule, spending many nights in sweaty rave dens and sleek European clubs with his MPC, and in Turning Dragon we see him put down acoustic instrumentation (a big feature in his recent work) and naturally drawn to experimenting with a harder, more immediate sound. Ministry of Sound kick off their latest compilation series with a mix from New York club scene stalwart Francois K.

Posted by admin on January 4th, 2008 under Club Dance Music

Francois K has done it all. He started out spinning disco in the seventies at legendary spots such as Studio54, Paradise Garage and The Loft. He mixed an album for Kraftwerk, he toured with Larry Levan, and he set up New York’s original all-day party Body & Soul with Joe Claussell and Danny Krivit. And that’s before we even get to the noughties. These days, however, Monsieur Kevorkian is known for keeping Gotham City up on Monday nights via his Deep Space residency where he throws down dub techno, nu-disco, hip hop, funk and house. He also runs four record labels.Masterpiece arrives as a weighty three-disc set and in typical Kevorkian fashion takes in house, techno, electrohouse, dance rock and progressive house. Disc one features the 2007 crowdpleasers from Dubfire, Cobblestone Jazz, D.I.M, Gregor Tresher, and Audion while disc two is a nod to the Motor City with Model 500, Drexciya and Robert Hood sitting alongside Europeans Len Faki, Joris Voorn and Samuel L Sessions. On disc three, K dons his house cap mixing up current deep house from Dennis Ferrer, Henrik Schwarz and The Mountain People alongside The Orb, Dee-lite and Jephte Guillaume. Fabric London releases the latest Fabric Live compilation mixed by the one and only DJ Craze.

Posted by admin on January 4th, 2008 under Club Dance Music

Craze’s life is a legacy of rags to riches, geek to chic, no-name to world fame. He never had it easy ” from fleeing battle in Nicaragua at the age of 3 to a geeky adolescence to Hurricane Andrew hitting Miami in 1992 ” nor did have ever have any coattails to ride; his is a story that’s an uphill battle, but a story that ends right at the top. “My mom always taught me I could do anything I put my mind to. So when she asked what I wanted to do with my turntables, I told her, ‘Be the best DJ in the world,’” Craze casually laughs. And that he proved ” 3 times at the DMC World Championships, an unprecedented record, and a title that no other solo DJ has yet to match. While Craze is regarded internationally and unquestionably as one of the best scratch DJs in the world, it’s still astonishing to see his overwhelming number of titles on paper: Craze has won first place for the USA DMC Championships in 1998, World ITF Scratch Off Championships in 1998, ITF Western Hemisphere Scratch Off Championships (1998, ’99), Winter Music Conference Scratch Off Champion (1996, ‘97, ‘98, ‘99), East Coast DMC Championships (1997), East Coast Rap Sheet Championships (1996) and Zulu National Championships (1995, ‘96), to name but a few. Additionally, DJ Craze claimed 2nd place in the first DMC Team Championship with his Allies’ crew (which included fellow champions A-Trak and Infamous) in 1999 ” and then in 2000, the Allies’ won the Team Championship title, taking it from the previous year’s winners the Scratch Perverts.“I won the DMC’s when I was 20. I joined the Regionals, won that, Nationals, won that, and then won the Worlds. And I took it from A-Trak ” that’s right! But he was only like 15 when I beat him. I was still scared. Then in that year, in ’98 when I beat A-Trak in the [DMC] Worlds, I didn’t wanna battle no more and I thought he’d be the icing on the cake, so instead we formed the Allies and we kicked everybody’s butt. (laughs) Except the [Scratch] Perverts, they beat us once in the US, but then we came over here to London and we kicked their butt. So hey, payback’s a bitch, Tony!” - Craze

On top of his untouchable turntablist skills and scratch champion showmanship, the world has also recognised that Craze is a second to none club DJ ” he has toured the globe over, from Jamaica to Australia to Japan to Iceland to France to the country he was born, Nicaragua. All DJing aside, Craze is also a world- renowned producer, releasing wildly successful drum’n’bass records with labels such as Virus, V Recordings and Undiluted, and other hip hop inspired productions with the likes of DMC Records, Ninja Tune Records, OM Records and K7 Records. It’s the respect from both DJs and audiences alike that has paved Craze’s seamless move between hip hop and turntablism to drum’n’bass ” both serious subzero clique/cult scenes the globe over demanding much of any artist trying to peddle their wares worldwide; to what now sounds like club-style Miami bass, formed with the technical love of hip hop with clean cuts and ridiculously dextrous scratching, but a mix up of straight up rap, ghettotech, raw booty house, old-school electro, Baltimore/Miami bass crossover and sweaty lo-end dancefloor music, making it all but impossible to keep still. This is Craze ” the man who arguably defined his hometown Miami turntablism scene, only to return now to reinvent this take on the Miami sound; a neo-genre of his own special blend of every which way club codes from the ghosts of discos past, present and future.FABRICLIVE 38 is no exception. A rally ride though 74 minutes of no excuses dancefloor joy, shamelessly laden with guilty pleasures and block rockin’ renegade styles from one of the most skilled DJs ever to stand before two turntables. Taking cuts from current darlings of the hour like Cool Kids, Bangers and Cash, Chromeo and Kid Sister to stalwart sounds from N.O.R.E, Coldcut and Tuff Crew to licks less likely from Earth, Wind and Fire, Armand Van Helden and The Chemical Brothers, this is a mix’n’blend masterclass.“I wanted more of a club sound. I’m mixing up a lot of styles ” I have some freestyle tracks on there, some bass tracks on there, I’m putting ‘Ho Fo Sho’ on there, I’ve got some hip hop tracks on at the beginning…I wanted to also big up Eli from New York, he’s really dope right now, doing a bunch of remixes. His sound is like ” well, I describe it as old school freestyle meets house. I wanted it to be a dance, club, mixed up sound ” but not mashup. It’s just more fun club stuff, some Klever stuff in there, some of Sinden’s stuff in there…and it’s ALL scratched up. I’ll try to do the whole turntablist thing. I can’t do a mix where it’s just tracks playing.” - CrazeTracklist:01. Craze ” Intro Ft. Armanni Reign - Craze
